We took a trip to France and tried out their late autumn test with our French imports Teddy (Tjiehtele Des Grandes Maurieres) and Tuva (Tribute Des Grandes Maurieres). We had challenging conditions with a lot of rain and fog with no wind. We succeeded with quality assessment Excellent for Teddy and Tuva, Tuva was also rewarded with a national certificate CACT when she was ranked first in her party. The tests are different from what we are used to at home. The test lasts only 15 minutes and if the dog presents a good search, otherwise shorter – during this short time the dog must find birds, point and present the bird together with the handler, also complete steadiness to wing and shot is required. It was challenging for me with Teddy, who is used to Nordic flush, we need to train a different approach for the international tests. Regular quartering is a must, as well as high and steady speed without stopping during the quest. All dogs are tested in single run. Every day 60-90 continental dogs were entered to the trials, I’m really impressed by the organization and logistics around the arrangement. I’m very thankful that we got the opportunity to participate, hopefully we will be back next year!
